If you happened to ask a pediatrician from Cary (or Cary pediatricians for that matter), what is a typical day like, any idea what they will say? In this little composition we will focus on what it is like to be a pediatrician. For good or for bad, here is what it is typically like:
Why a pediatrician? Most pediatricians will say that they always wanted to be a doctor. It was in medical school that they decided to focus on the study of pediatrics. It is during the third year of medical school that you begin to work with patients more. You will be doing what are called rotations, spending times in various areas of the hospital. Some of these sections will be surgery, psychiatry, internal medicine, family practice, delivering lots of babies, and of course the area of pediatrics. Most pediatricians will say that they liked the area of pediatrics.
What is a typical work day like in the life of a pediatrician? It often begins by going to the hospital and making what are called the rounds of seeing new babies and visiting any sick kids that have been hospitalized. Normal office hours typically start at about 8:30am (or 9:30am) and end around 4pm to 5pm. A typical lunch can run for about 1 hour to 1.5 hours. While they are at the office pediatricians will usually have two appointment types. The first type is when a young one gets ill and needs medical attention. The second type of appointment is your routinely scheduled appointment for checkups and shots. In a typical week a pediatrician will often see about one hundred and twenty-seven patients.
What are the work hours like? The typical work week is about 50 hrs. This is spent visiting hospital patients, office work, being on call, and doing all the numerous types of office paperwork that comes with this sort of profession these days. While they are on call they might have to go see a sick patient in the hospital. Not everything can be fixed with a simple phone call mind you. If the pediatrician runs the office by himself he is always on call. This is why many pediatricians will choose to work together. In this particular way they can share the responsibilities of the on call nature of their job.
How much $$$ do pediatricians make? They are paid quite well as you might suspect, depending on which profession you would like to compare them with. The average annual wage for a pediatrician is $135,400 per year, but this statistic is from 1993, so they most likely make more than this these days. The range of pay is from around $60,000 to $400,000. The more patients a pediatrician sees, the more money he or she will make.
So, what do you think? Does this sound appealing to you? Who knows…you might end up as a pediatrician one day!
