Pros And Cons Of Laser Surgery For Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a common problem. It is estimated that up to 90% of women develop them during the later stages of pregnancy, but anyone who rapidly increases in weight or size is also susceptible.

How to get rid of stretch marks… Now there’s a question. There are a few options. Firstly, you can do nothing, and simply try to cover them over with well chosen clothes. You could opt to use creams to cover them over, or you could go to the other extreme of the pay scale and opt for laser surgery. This article will examine the pros and cons of the last option – laser surgery.

There are two main “pro” points for laser surgery. First of all laser treatment is “bloodless” (i.e. no physical cutting of the skin associated with traditional methods) and quite painless, and pain is often one of the reasons people don’t want to consider it as a treatment. Secondly, and most importantly, there is evidence to suggest that laser surgery improves the look of the stretch marks. A study in the Dermatologic Surgery showed that a pulsed dye laser treatment gave “good and very good” subjective improvement in 33 out of 37 patients.

As expected, there are negative points with laser surgery. To begin with, it’s a lot of money. Several thousand in fact. To receive the full benefits of the treatment you’ll need to go through up to 8 sessions, and each session can cost between $400 and $1500. Next is the fact that they won’t actually get rid of the stretch marks altogether. Although there is evidence showing it helps reduce the visibility of them, the fact is they are scars and as such you won’t be able to remove them completely.

Laser surgery is also not without risks. As with traditional surgery the risks include infection, scarring and pain, and sometimes several weeks of recovery time. Laser surgery may also cause skin discolouration. If you are going to have an anaesthetic you will also need to know the risks that go along with that.

If you have decided that laser surgery is for you the best results are achieved when the stretch marks aren’t too old and still red in colour. When you meet with the surgeon ask him of his experience so you get a feel for how many times he’s performed the surgery. If you have darker skin be warned that the chances of skin discolouration increase, so also ask if they have experience treating darker skin.

If you decide that you want to go through with the surgery, my final and probably most important piece of advice is to research the clinic that will be performing it. Make sure it’s reputable and if possible speak to people who have had treatment there before – nothing puts the mind at rest more than an impartial recommendation.
