Routes Into A Career In Pathology

In order to become a pathologist you will need to first of all complete a medical degree after completing secondary school and three grade A A- Levels in at least two Science subjects. Biology and Chemistry are considered the most useful for careers in medicine. A medicine based degree is essential when considering a career in pathology. Becoming a doctor, dentist or vet is essential as a starting position for the journey to becoming qualified. There are no alternative ways into becoming a pathologist, a medicine based degree is essential. It usually takes five years to achieve a medicine degree, minimum.

Training to become a pathologist can take anywhere between five and ten years for UK- based students and there are at least two exams you must pass within this period. Often pathologists choose to research a particular organ such as skin (dermatology) or the study of perinatal (still births, miscarriages and terminations.) Once you are working in a hospital you may be required to work along several different areas but still be known for being a specialist in your chosen field.

If you already have a degree in a science or health related field you may be able to enrol on an accelerated medical degree course which takes a year off the length of the normal course- meaning four years instead of the usual five. This is the only way in which you can shorten the length of time required in order to become qualified.

If you miss the required A Level grades to get into medical school you will need to resit as doing a different degree will merely waste your time. There is no substitute for a medical degree so you will eventually have to do a medical degree anyway.
