Having an allergy is not an uncommon thing here in this country or around the world. It can cause the uncomfortable symptoms of a runny nose and itchy cough. There are plenty of medications to treat these problems, and they will be discussed here. However, this will also go into the allergy treatment alternatives for severe allergic reactions.

A seasonal allergy usually arises with the symptoms of runny nose, headache, cough, and watery eyes. This is not serious, and these symptoms can be treated easily. There are many medications which are available with and without prescriptions.

One helpful thing to do is to have a physician do a skin test to find out what specifically may be causing the allergies so that they can be avoided. These may be things like pollens or certain foods like shellfish. Avoiding triggers may help eliminate allergies.

The first type of medication to try is an antihistamine. It will cause sedation in many people, but there are forms which will not cause people to become sedated. These can be gotten at the pharmacy without a prescription, and they will relieve itchy eyes and runny nose.

The next thing that can be tried are nasal steroids. There are also alpha-adrenergic decongestants which can be given if steroids or antihistamines are not working. These will be prescribed by a doctor.

The next type of allergy to be discussed are the severe anaphylactic allergies which may require a hospitalization and are considered life-threatening. This could include an exposure to a bee sting. Some people may react to it more severely than others and they may break out in hives. This may further result in the constriction of airways which will require immediate intubation to help with breathing. The most important thing is for a person to know they have these allergies so that they can self-inject epinephrine at the time of the strike of the allergy.

The medications that are used at the hospital are not needed to be noted here, but it is important that the person be aware that they know that a severe allergic reaction is occurring. A doctor should prescribe this epinephrine to all of their patients who have these problems.

There are different allergies, but with seasonal allergies, the reaction is usually the same. One gets a runny nose, itchy eyes, and cough. These are due to a certain mechanism which can usually be resolved with antihistamines. There are other drugs as well, and a doctor should be approached for these. Knowing what foods and triggers to avoid is the most important factor along with having the epinephrine injection.

Angioedema Treatment: There are four basic categories when it comes to treatments: allergic, drug induced, hereditary and acquired angioedema treatments. Each diagnoses is accompanied with separate methods. Therefore it is important to consult a doctor or physician in regards to treatment options and what may be right for each patient.

Treatment: The best treatment depends on which type is presenting as follows:

Allergic angioedema: strict avoidance of the allergen and use of antihistamines/steroid therapy to aid in the alleviation of symptoms.

Drug Induced Angioedema should be treated by an immediate discontinuation of the drug that caused the condition. Additional drugs that could provide alleviation from symptoms should also be carefully considered.

Hereditary Angioedema treatment should begin with avoidance of the specific stimuli that resulted in the attacks in the past. Proper drug therapy should also be considered.

Drug therapy is the only appropriate treatment for acquired angioedema. It should be closely monitored to ensure that any adverse effects are caught and rectified immediately.

In some instances the condition can be safely left untreated. Cool compresses and/or soaks can alleviate mild pain and/or discomfort. Conditions that are resulting in breathing difficulty in the patient should be treated as an emergency requiring immediate medical attention.

Medications used to effectively used as treatment include: antihistamines, corticosteroids, Tagamet, epinephrine, bronchodilators, etc. For relief from breathing difficulty individuals should immediately seek medical aid. In a hospital setting a tube may be placed in the throat in order to keep the airway open and relieve the breathing difficulty.

Summary: Close monitoring of all angioedema patients undergoing treatment is highly suggested. Any drug therapy can have severe negative effects. Lack of monitoring can have dire consequences due to the fact that in some cases the drug therapy can actually exacerbate angioedema symptoms. Be sure to consult a doctor or physician if there is any worsening of symptoms or if any new physical problems occur.

Urticaria cure: Those who suffer from Urticaria generally see an outbreak of hives. Hives may vary in size and shape, but are generally red and itchy. Short outbreaks of a day or a couple of days are known as Acute Urticaria while inflammations that last longer than six weeks are known as Chronic Urticaria.

While there is no known cure for Urticaria aside from prevention, which involves avoiding the causes, there are treatments that can help reduce the itching and inflammation. Urticaria is generally triggered by an allergic response to food or environmental factors. Foods to be cautious of include eggs, fish, shellfish, milk, wheat, etc. Keeping a food diary can help narrow down which foods might be responsible for outbreaks. Intense change in temperatures as well as physical activities may cause an outbreaks as well as stress or anxiety. Medications such as aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and painkillers such as codeine may triggers hives or increase their symptoms.

Although dietary and lifestyle changes may help with Acute Urticaria because it is most likely the result of an allergic reaction, Chronic Urticaria is much harder to treat. Half of all cases of Chronic Urticaria (CU) result form an autoimmune disorder, and the remaining 50% are diagnosed as ideopathic, meaning a cause cannot be determined. For them, cure is even harder to find. For those who have been diagnosed with Chronic Ideopathic Urticaria unique diets, such as the Histamine-Restricted Diet and the Low Salicylate Diet may also be advocated. Often a diary is kept so patients can work more closely with their doctors to discover and discard any and all catalysts.

Many people with CIU keep a diary and work with their doctors to identify and rule out various triggers. Special diets, such as the Histamine-Restricted Diet and the Low Salicylate Diet may also be recommended. As with Acute Urticaria and Chronic Ideopathic Urticaria, there is no cure for Autoimmune Chronic Urticaria (ACU). Treatment for ACU includes antihistamines, and may also require autoimmune suppressants. Corticosteroids, such as Prednisone, can also be given, but they do not provide sufficient long-term results.

The latest research demonstrates that cyclosporine is one of the most successful drugs for the treatment of people with ACU. Dr. Malcom Greaves (a leading researcher of CU) detected that in cases of ACU where Cyclosporine was prescribed, at least 75% of patients treated for 2-3 months experienced total or near total remission. One third of those patients remained in remission, one-third had a mild relapse and in one-third the relapse was severe following the withdrawal of Cyclosporine.1

While Western medicine has not yet found a cure for Urticaria, various homeopathic “cures” are being promoted. Detox diets, chemical free cleansers, acupuncture, anti-hive formulas and Urticaria kits all assert their ability to alleviate and or eliminate symptoms.

Summary: Urticaria is a condition where hives erupt on the body. Hives may appear at any part of the body and generally are red and itchy in appearance. They may last hours, days or months, depending on the type of Urticaria. Treatments include antihistamines, natural remedies, oatmeal or baking soda baths and more.

A chronic ear infection can occur in people of any age. Youth are the most susceptible, as are swimmers. A chronic ear infection will last in the patient for at least 12 weeks without healing. The infection could occur in any of the three parts of the ear – inner ear (labrynthitis), middle ear (otis media), or outer ear (otis externa). The most common type of chronic ear infection occurs within the middle ear. Symptoms of an ear infection are intense pain and pressure in the infected part of the ear.

The pain inside of the ear could be caused by an infection that is either viral or bacterial. The pain could also be caused by a common cold, a buildup of fluid, climate extremes, or swimming. The degree of pain and severity will vary from person to person.

Earwax buildup is often confused with having an ear infection. This buildup can cause an earache, but the wax can be properly flushed by a doctor and is not long-term.

Chronic ear infections can result in several different bodily issues. The individual could lose his/her hearing or have issues with speech development. There could be a loss of balance, or in extreme cases, swelling of the brain or paralysis of the face. If ear infection pain is accompanied by a fever, evident swelling, or dizziness, then a doctor should be contacted immediately.

How is it treated? Some chronic ear infections are treated with prescribed oral decongestants, nasal sprays, or antibiotics, and the treatment can take several months to become fully effective. For more intense cases, surgery may be conducted to insert tubes into the ear that will help drain any buildup of fluids.

Every patient will have different array of symptoms. Pain will vary. Other symptoms may include a pus-like drainage, redness within the ear, or blood in the middle ear. A doctor will test the complete ear and sinus passages, searching for any blockage or fluids buildup.

If the infection has spread to the mastoid bone or if a cyst has developed, the doctor will perform surgery.

Summary: Children and adults are susceptible to chronic ear infections. Children and swimmers are the most susceptible. Loss of hearing may occur, or there may be other damages as a result. If the chronic ear infection is severe, there may be a swelling within the brain or a cyst may grow. Surgery may be performed if these items occur. The most common treatment for chronic ear infections is a prescribed oral antibiotic, followed by eardrops or a nasal decongestant. Young children that cannot speak may tug or pull on their ear to indicate pain and pressure. Headaches, loss of balance, or trouble with speech are also symptoms to watch for.

Angioedema Cures: There are several categories used to define angioedema cures. These categories are easily identified by the type of angioedema they are intended to treat. The common types are: hereditary angioedema, drug induced angioedema, angioedema, and acquired angioedema.

Treatment: Treatment varies depending upon different types of angioedema. Different methods are required. Various cases of angioedema have different causes. This means they must be handled differently. Proper diagnosis is necessary for effective treatment.

Allergic Angioedema requires the avoidance of the allergen and proper use of antihistamines and sometimes steroid therapy. The initial response to any allergy based condition is to first identify the allergen. If the individual is not aware of the allergic cause of the condition they can consult an experienced allergist who can aid them in identifying the specific allergen.

Drug Induced Angioedema requires an immediate discontinuation of the drug that caused the condition. It also requires possible treatment with additional drugs in order to alleviate symptoms. In some instances drug induced conditions can be severe and quick to present. This makes fast diagnosis and efficient treatment vital.

Hereditary Angioedema treatment is based on avoidance of the stimuli that resulted in the condition. Proper drug therapy can also be an effective tool. Individuals should be monitored to establish a healthy drug therapy treatment program.

Acquired Angioedema requires proper drug therapy. Any instituted drug therapy should be closely monitored for the presentation of adverse effects.

Summary: Patients undergoing Angioedema Treatment should be monitored closely as drug treatments can have adverse effects; some even having the possibility to exacerbate the symptoms.

An experienced allergist can offer a lot of knowledge and experience that is useful in identifying and treating allergy based stimuli resulting in angioedema. Allergists undergo extensive training in order to provide their very specialized skill set to those suffering from allergy based or asthma related diseases and conditions.

Sinusitis Treatments: Sinusitis can be treated with either medications or home treatment remedies. The objectives of treatment are to: promote drainage, thin mucus, reduce swelling, relieve pain and pressure, clear up any infection and prevent permanent damage to the tissue lining the nose and sinuses.

Drinking water, teas, fruit juices and other beverages keeps the body hydrated and supports the cleansing of the nasal passages. Breathing in steam or hot water vapor (while taking a shower or sitting over a bowl of hot water) several times a day also helps to alleviate symptoms. Menthol and various menthol preparations can also be added to humidifiers and other hot water sources to further loosen mucus and contribute to an overall better breathing experience.

There are several methods of nasal irrigation that can be used to thin the mucus. Neti-pots (small, ceramic pots that look like Arabian lamps) and nasal sprays both provide the flush needed to clear sinus passageways. Medications that assist in bringing mucus and other material up from the lungs, bronchi, and trachea are also used. Mucolytic and cough reducing drugs may also assist in easing sinusitis blockage.

Acetaminophen is thought to relieve irritation in the sinuses, however it merely helps reduce pressure and pain. Aspirin and NSAIDs both help take away pain and do help reduce inflammation. Warm compresses can also be used against the eyes and nose to help relieve discomfort.

Babies and young kids need to see a doctor. Any medicine, over the counter or not, may have side effects in children that are not seen in adults. Buying creams that use rosemary, lavender and eucalyptus can be rubbed on the child’s chest to help relieve pressure and mucous. Eucalyptus oil in a hot bath combined with steam can help kids breath better.

If a bacterial infection is present, antibiotics may be prescribed. These medications can vary in length of treatment with some being as short as three days and others lasting as long as several weeks or more. In addition decongestants (which reduce swelling of nasal mucous membranes), analgesics (pain relievers), mucolytics (which thin mucus), corticosteroids (which reduce inflammation) or inhaled antibiotics may also be given. These medications will not work if a virus or fungus causes the infection.

Sinusitis may clear on its own, without the use of any drugs or prescriptions. However, if symptoms do not clear after several days or weeks, it is important to visit a doctor. Home therapies may be used at any time during the inflammation, but should not be used in conjunction with other medications or prescriptions unless approved by a doctor. In the most extreme cases, surgery might be needed to correct a deviated septum or to help open nasal passageways.

For relief of recurring sinusitis, visit a doctor or consult a homeopath who may be able to help.

Atopic rhinitis occurs when the lining of the sinuses become inflamed. The nasal mucosa becomes irritated, causing a drippy, itchy nose. A postnasal drip can lead to coughing and a sore throat. Atopic rhinitis may be genetically passed down and levels of severity will vary from person to person. Another term for seasonal allergic rhinitis is hay fever.

Allergens are the most common factors that trigger atopic rhinitis. Allergens may include pollen, pet dander, or dust. During the summer and spring seasons, pollen may cause more breakouts and flare-ups. A chronic version of the rhinitis could have symptoms of coughing, post nasal drip, sinus pressures, and sneezing. These could be caused by pet dander or dust mites, and symptoms could lead to recurring headaches throughout the year.

Seasonal allergies are the most common form of rhinitis, but there are other non-allergic causes. Nasal polyps, hormones, and nose obstructions may trigger a flare-up. Atopic rhinitis may also be the result of taking other medications as a side effect.

Another major trigger to rhinitis is mold, which can infiltrate walls and ceilings. Mold should be removed, if it is a trigger. Call a professional, or eliminate the mold with a mild bleach solution.

How is it treated? By learning what the trigger symptoms to atopic rhinitis are, the problem is likely to be eliminated. Pay attention to pollen counts and stay indoors if allergens are a trigger. Use air conditioning and keep the windows closed to decrease pollen entering the home.

Clean often and vacuum to avoid dust mites and pet dander. Wash sheets and animal bedding at least once a week in a high water temperature to kill mites. In order to identify triggers, an allergy test may be taken.

If a mucous test has diagnosed rhinitis, then an oral allergy medication or nasal spray may be prescribed. For shorter periods of time, decongestants may be prescribed.

Summary of atopic rhinitis: This condition often called hay fever and is hereditary. People may suffer with allergies, sinus problems, and/or asthma in addition to other rhinitis symptoms. Pressure build up in sinus areas and headaches may occur, as may a runny, stuffy nose. Triggers are seasonal – pollen, but also year round – pet dander, dust, and mold. Doctors may prescribe nasal sprays, decongestants, or antihistamines as treatment methods.

A successful Asthma Alternative: Successful in reference to a medical treatment refers to its effectiveness. A successful asthma alternative is one that is effective. That means that it should decrease or eliminate symptoms in a time appropriate manner or for the long term. Most individuals suffering from asthma don’t have severe reactions. But those who do suffer from the possibility of severe reactions should first and foremost avoid the situations or allergens that cause or exacerbate the presentation of symptoms. But this isn’t always possible.

A lot of cases it is best for patients to actively seek relief from the negative effect of asthma. Many asthma sufferers greatly appreciate the involvement of an allergist. An allergist is a qualified physician with specialized training in allergies and asthma.

Any allergist in the United States is certified by the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (ABAI). For an allergist to obtain certification they must first complete the required evaluation preceded by the appropriate education at an accredited institution.

Allergists have at least 9 years of training. They must first complete medical school and graduate with a medical degree. Next they undergo 3 years of training in internal medicine or pediatrics. Next they must pass one of two exams: American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) or American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

At this point the potential allergist is still not finished. They must next complete a sub-specialty in allergy-immunology with a 2 year fellowship in a related program.

Treatment: Any successful asthma alternative treatment must take into account the specific allergen and the specific situation of the patient. But two options that are often viable are: immunotherapy and pharmacotherapy.

The first step in the treatment of asthma related allergies is to avoid the allergens. But this isn’t always possible regardless of how dedicated the individual might be. Some people find themselves suffering from airborne allergens like pollen. This makes it much harder to avoid them and they often see increased problems.

Summary: Pharmacotherapy involves combinations of drugs that can alleviate severe symptoms immediately. This type of treatment isn’t often used effectively as treatment for chronic or long term symptoms. Immunotherapy involves a gradual vaccination of the individual with progressively larger doses of the allergen in question. It can reduce and/or eliminate the hypersensitivity.

Allergy Treatment Alternatives: Countless therapies (medicinal and naturopathic) exist in the treatment of allergies. However, the treatment that works the best is avoidance and elimination of the allergens.

Allergies can be treated with both over the counter drugs and prescription drugs. Antihistamines can be found in any pharmacy or grocery store. These are called over the counter (OTC) drugs and anyone may purchase them without a prescription from a doctor. When allergies can’t be relived through OTC drugs, a doctor should be consulted for prescription drugs. While drugs may help relieve sneezing, red eyes and stuffy head and noses associated with allergies, there may be side effects, so beware of what is going on in your body.

Sometimes both lotions and sprays are utilized to relieve the swelling that occurs in the sinuses and in the bronchial tubes. Corticosteriods are the most common lotions used. They also help get rid of mucus that builds up with allergies. Eye drops can also be found OTC or through prescription. Be sure to read directions if you are a contact lens user as some drops may interfere with or cloud up contacts. Allergy shots are a last resort for the most severe cases.

Injections are often uncomfortable and problematic to schedule. Therefore, a new approach to allergy treatment is being pursued in the form of sublingual immunotherapy. In this method, drinkable allergen solutions are placed under the tongue. Just as shots do, this therapy shrinks a person’s sensitivity to a variety of allergens. But unlike injections, the drops are handy and pain-free, which are significant factors to consider when dealing with allergies in children.

Prescription treatments, however, are often expensive and frequently produce unwanted side effects (drowsiness and nasal irritation). Even with positive safety profiles, many people prefer home therapies, which are drug free. While homeopathic remedies can be simple lifestyle changes (altering diet, keeping windows closed when in the car and at home, limiting time outdoors during allergy season, etc.) others treat the symptoms and provide the same kind of allergy relief as traditional western medicines.

Neti pots (small, ceramic pots that look like Arabian lamps) filled with tap water or salt water are used to rinse away allergens in the nasal passages. This flushing action provides the same relief as a nasal spray and is effective in both children and adults. Quercetin, a bioflavinoid plant compound found in apples, citrus fruits, onions, tomatoes, broccoli, and wine has been shown to stabilize mast cells in the body to prevent them from releasing histamines.

Daily dosed of bee pollen or honey have also proven to alleviate allergy symptoms. Bee pollen is rich in vitamins and antioxidants. It can also be used as a slave. Raw honey contains all of the pollen, dust, and molds that cause 90% of all allergies. By ingesting raw honey on a daily basis allergy sufferers can build up immunity to elements that are causing their problems.

Just as prescription drugs and OTC drugs have side effects, so too can natural remedies. Those who are at risk for bee stings may also react negatively to bee pollen, potentially causing anaphylactic shock. There is also a level of bacteria in honey that can cause problems in babies and young kids. In order to properly diagnose what is causing allergies and thus learn how to avoid them, please consult a doctor.

The skin condition Atopic Dermatitis is a dry, scaly appearance and feel to the skin. Those that have been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis are susceptible to asthma, allergies, and/or eczema. Each of these three conditions may be present throughout an individual’s life span, but they may not be active at the same time on the skin.

Many individuals are diagnosed with atopic dermatitis by the age of two and symptoms disappear by the age of three. Some people have symptoms of the skin condition throughout their lifetime. Bumps and scaling will occur on the skin, and sometimes weeping may take place. Weeping is an oozing of liquid from the inflamed skin. Atopic dermatitis is not contagious and is thought of as a genetic condition.

There are many people throughout the world that are diagnosed with this condition. Triggers can range from stress or the rapid change in temperature. Triggers can also come from chemicals or perfumes that are found in shampoos, soaps, or detergents. Pet dander is another commonly known trigger.

How is it treated? Prevention is the best form of treatment, and this includes maintaining a high level of moisture on the skin. This can be done through daily moisturizers that have oatmeal, which reduces itching. Another method of prevention is taking short, warm baths. People should wear gentle fabrics to protect the skin.

Hydrocortisone creams are available over-the-counter and should be used for a flare-up. The cream will soothe the itchy feel. If the condition does not get better or if it worsens, then medical attention should be sought. The doctor will prescribe a cream or oral corticosteroid for the area.

If the case is extreme, then the doctor may apply topical immunosuppressant medicines (TIM). TIMs are used as a last resort and with extreme pain due to the possible cancerous side affects.

Atopic Dermatitis Summary: This skin condition is dry, itchy, and scaly. Those diagnosed with it may also have asthma, allergies, or eczema. These three conditions will not necessarily be active in an individual at the same time. The person will often have an outbreak of each, though, in their lifetime.

Appearing as dry, scaly, or itchy skin, atopic dermatitis is treatable with oils, moisturizers, and prevention a reaction via dyes in soaps or perfumes. Other forms of treatment are hydrocortisone creams, corticosteroid creams, or oral prescriptions. TIMs may also be suggested and prescribed in extreme cases.
