When a child coughs, parents are stressed and fearful especially with cough that persists up to two weeks and which bother and sap the energy of the child. Some coughing also occurs with vomiting, and leaves the child taken. In fact, a child can cough the worst at night, and this robs her of sleep which her body needs to recover and become strong for the coughing again.
A fact about cough that parents require to appreciate is that it is not a disease that calls for a cure. Coughing is the body’s natural reflex to eject phlegm from the lungs and the throat where, mixed with bacteria, it may cause an infection. Coughing is indeed good. And children who know how to cough without help from parents are doing great discharging the nasty sputum. There should by and large be no worries over cough that lasts up to 2-3 days and where the phlegm is plain and not yellowish.
Parents can help children by fortifying them, because if anything, coughing can be so wearing and with want of sleep due to coughing at nighttime; the immune system weakens. Lots of water, fresh fruit juices, rest, hand washing, and a healthy diet can facilitate the child’s body to become strong enough to contend with the outcomes of recurring and tiring coughing. This therapy can extend for at least a week.
Parents should, however, take bigger measures if a cough prevails for two weeks or more. Bring the child to a physician who can diagnose the sickness which the cough is trying to manifest a symptom of. Parents should observe age-appropriate medicines and administer to the kid for a week.
If after a week of medication and the coughing is still there, then bring the kid to the paediatrician to confirm the theory that the cough may be symptomatic of other more serious sicknesses like asthma.
A word of precaution to parents: Never give kids an adult OTC cough medicine as these have damaging effects on the kid. Cough medicines also do not cure the cough, they simply remedy the child of the irritations connected with coughing such as runny nose, sore throat, losing breath, fever and fatigue.
Visit a medical doctor for the most recommended way to cough management.
