Syphilis is a disease that is transmitted through sexual contact. The first symptoms of syphilis are usually sores called chancres. They may or may not be painful but are caused by a very contagious bacteria and can only be treated by a doctor.
The second stage of syphilis is usually indicated by a rash. The ringworm rash may appear as the sores are going away or even a few weeks after the sores are gone. Sometimes the syphilis rash is real faint and appears in the palm of the hands or soles of the feet. It is easily misdiagnosed as these are also characteristics of some other diseases.
There are some other symptoms of syphilis that may appear along with the syphilis rash. Secondary syphilis can show up as swollen lymph glands, weight loss, fever, a sore throat, muscle aches or even common fatigue. Many times the symptoms will go away even though there has been no treatment. However, the infection is not gone and can still be progressing into further stages of the disease.
If left untreated damage to other areas of the body can occur. Syphilis can cause damage to the internal organs. This includes the brain and nerves. Eventually it may affect the heart, liver, blood vessels and even joints and bones. By the late stages of syphilis symptoms may include paralysis, blindness, or dementia. Any of these can be severe enough to end in death.
As soon as you suspect syphilis there should be immediate contact with your health care professional. They can observe the rash or sores and possibly run blood tests to confirm a case of syphilis.
Curing syphilis is easy in the early stages. If it has been in the body for less than twelve months it can be treated with simple antibiotics. There may be a need of further antibiotic treatments if it has been in the body for longer than a year. There are no home remedies which can cure syphilis. Also no medications that are presently available over the counter without a prescription are effective against syphilis. Early treatment can eliminate the disease, but any damage that it may have caused cannot be reversed.
The best time to pursue medical help is as soon as you suspect you have come in contact with the disease. Don’t wait until the syphilis rash appears or there is chancre present. Early intervention is imperative to curing syphilis.
